The band was formed in the suburban area of Summerlin, Las Vegas, by the two childhood friends Ryan Ross on the guitar and Spencer Smith on the drums. Since the age of thirteen, the two played blink-182 covers in bands of different formations. Ryan and Spencer then created a band under the name of "Summer League," possibly a reference to the suburb in which they lived, with childhood friends Brent Wilson, and Trevor who would later leave the band.
'A Fever You Can't Sweat Out,' Panic!'s debut album
It was at Palo Verde High School, Brent met Brendon Urie. Wilson had asked Urie to try out as guitarist for Panic!, as they were looking for a replacement at the time. Originally, Urie was not the band's lead singer. Rather, the position belonged to current guitarist and lyricist, Ryan Ross. However, when the band heard him sing backup during a rehearsal, they were impressed with his vocal abilities and unanimously decided to make him the singer, the band then settled on the name 'Panic! at the Disco.' They got the name from is the lyrics of a Name Taken song called "Panic": Panic at the disco / Sat back and took it so slow / Are you nervous? Are you shaking? / Save compliments to praise complation / We don't have to feel we fit in / We can move back / We can leave them. [2]
In order to promote their music, the band contacted Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz through LiveJournal, and sent him a link to their PureVolume site. Wentz was apparently so impressed that he took a trip to Las Vegas to meet the band in person. After seeing them practice in their garage, he asked if they would sign with his Fueled by Ramen imprint label Decaydance.

2006: Debut album and departure of Brent Wilson

Panic! at the Disco released their debut album A Fever You Can't Sweat Out on September 27th 2005, quickly building up a fan base through PureVolume and MySpace, though achieving little commercial recognition. After a consistent presence in PureVolume's top 10 signed artists, and reaching number one in MySpace's indie charts, Panic! at the Disco were featured on MTV's Total Request Live on January 17th 2006, where they premiered their music video for "I Write Sins Not Tragedies." Featuring Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque and an eerie circus wedding theme, the video débuted at #10 on the TRL countdown, later winning the Video of the Year award at the 2006 MTV Video Music Awards, beating out major artists such as Christina Aguilera, Shakira, Madonna and the Red Hot Chili Peppers. The single itself, released April 27th 2006, peaked at #7 in the US charts.
The band was originally third-billed for the Truckstops & Statelines Winter Tour in early 2006, which was headlined by The Academy Is... and included Acceptance as direct support and Hellogoodbye on the line-up. Due to their alarming increase in popularity before and during the tour, the band ended up getting pushed above Acceptance to second-billed every night playing right before the headliner and "A Fever You Can't Sweat Out" outsold The Academy Is...'s debut album, "Almost Here" during the tour.

Their second single, "But It's Better If You Do," was released in the UK on May 1st, 2006 where it debuted, and peaked, at #23. The accompanying music video, released the previous month, portrays the band playing in a speakeasy in 1930's America, which, according to Urie, shows "the dark and secluded style of Panic."[citation needed]
'I Write Sins Not Tragedies' Music Video
The band officially announced the departure of their bassist, Brent Wilson, with a message on the band's website on 17 May 2006. Wilson has since claimed that the decision to leave was not his, and that he was fired without warning for monetary reasons, though the rest of the band deny this.[1][2] Wilson is now demanding a cut in royalties, and has threatened he will take his former band to court if need be.[3]
Just days after Wilson's departure, the band embarked on their first headlining tour through Europe, with long-time friend, Jon Walker, filling in for the summer tour as a temporary bassist while a permanent replacement was sought. All of the dates were sold out, with some, notably Manchester, selling out in a matter of hours. Upon their return, the band embarked on a two-month North American headlining tour with supporting acts The Hush Sound, OK Go, The Dresden Dolls, and Lucent Dossier Vaudeville Cirque, still retaining Jon Walker as a temporary bassist. On July 3rd of that year, the band's MySpace profile was edited to list Walker as bassist/vocals, and he became a permanent member of Panic! at the Disco.
The success of their first two singles helped catapult their debut album to to the top of the Billboard Independent chart and to #13 on the Billboard 200 in July 2006. The video for I Write Sins Not Tragedies has been streamed from YouTube over 5 million times and the song itself is also the most requested song on New York City radio station Z-100,[citation needed] leading Urie to say he feels the song and video have been overplayed; "[It] isn't the only song we've written."[citation needed]
Towards the end of July 2006 Panic! at the Disco released their third music video, "Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off." The video features people with fish tank helmets walking the streets of what appears to be a studio back lot. The video only shows the band in one shot, reportedly because they felt that their looks were distracting from their music.
'Build God, Then We'll Talk' The Final single from A Fever You Can't Sweat Out
In early August 2006, A Fever You Can't Sweat Out went platinum, having sold over one million albums.
During Panic!'s opening song on August 25, 2006 at the Carling Weekend: Reading Festival, an unknown audience member threw a bottle at the stage, which struck and temporarily knocked out Brendon Urie, forcing the band to stop playing. After some minutes, he got back up and shouted to the crowd, "You can't take me out! Let's see how well you guys do with my left side," and continued with the same song.[4] In a phone interview Ryan Ross stated that "We [Panic!] were kinda expecting that [The bottling] going into the Reading, because we heard that that's kinda a tradition they have over there" and then continued by saying that "We walked on and we were kinda expecting that to keep our heads up the whole time, and unfortunately Brendon, he was catching bottles coming towards me and Jon and then he was dodging them himself, and kinda just didn't see one coming that I saw and it got him pretty good, and I dunno that's the only time anything like that's ever happened so hopefully we won't have to worry about anything like that too much" [5]
The band embarked on a world tour in the later part of 2006. It included dates in Australia, New Zealand, and continental Europe. On November 7, 2006, they kicked off their first-ever arena tour with Bloc Party (who shortly dropped out because of drummer Matt Tong suffering a collapsed lung) and Jack's Mannequin. The Plain White T's were added to the next few weeks of The Nothing Rhymes With Circus Tour. They opened up the shows beginning in New York through November 26 in Iowa. After that, Cobra Starship were on the tour through December 9 in San Diego. The band appeared along with Fall Out Boy, Marilyn Manson, and other bands on the special edition soundtrack of Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas covering "This Is Halloween", which was re-released in 3D on October 20.
Their most recent and final single from A Fever You Can't Sweat Out, "Build God, Then We'll Talk," was released on March 5th 2007. The accompanying music video portrays the fallacy of relationships.

2007-2008: Second album

The band planned to have producer Danny Elfman, who worked on the original Nightmare Before Christmas soundtrack, but have since been confirmed to have moved on to producer Rob Mathes, who worked on the re-release of the soundtrack, which Panic! was featured in with a cover of "This Is Halloween". [6]
Pete Wentz, the Fall Out Boy bassist who signed Panic!, said in an MTV article that he is "pumped for the [upcoming] Panic LP". He has reportedly heard some of the new material, and also said, "I think it will be all over for anyone else in 2008 if this [one] track is picked as the first single. It has the biggest hook I have ever heard." Wentz also commented on guitarist Ryan Ross, saying, "Ryan [Ross] always likes to keep me guessing or try to freak me out with stuff. So he will message me to tell me that they have just written an amazing song, and I will get excited, then he will message me again to tell me it sounds like 'Aladdin', and I will feel kind of bemused. Or last week he messaged me to say they had written a song that makes him think of France. He can say some weird stuff." [7] Since his statements however, Panic! have chosen to scrap all the songs that they had worked on and have remade the second album.
In May 2007 it was announced that a Smashing Pumpkins Tribute LP would be released, compiled by MySpace and Spin. The LP features Panic!'s cover of "Tonight, Tonight" and was included free in the June 26, 2007 issue of Spin. [8]
Panic! at the Disco have recently been performing new songs (Three in total) from their upcoming album, at the various festivals they are performing at before going into recording. Panic! have been playing two songs under the working titles "Nine In The Afternoon" and "When The Moon Fell In Love With The Sun" but it is believed that the titles will change once Panic! goes into recording over the winter. Only one of the new songs has been officially titled, "It's True Love" as stated by Ryan Ross in an interview with MTV, yet it seems that "It's True Love", may not appear in the second album. "We hadn't played a show in a while, and we wanted to play something new, but that song's probably not even going to make the record at this point," said Ryan Ross "We've changed a lot of what we want to do with the record. And I feel like we're happier with the new songs we have so far than we ever were with any of the old songs on the last record." [9]
When asked by MTV in an interview why Panic! had scrapped their whole record and chose to rewrite it Ryan Ross explained "We were just piecing stuff together up in the cabin. We would take lyrics, and we didn't really have ... a band set up," he explained. "We were just writing on pianos and guitars separately and just throwing other things in there, and it didn't really sound like a band, it sounded like a film score." Ryan then continued "We went through a stage of writing that just happened because we were on tour for so long, and we were sick of those old songs so much that we decided to write songs that were really complicated and challenging for us. Then we realized that it's not going to be any fun to play these live either, so we decided to ditch the whole project. There was a story line throughout the whole record, a short story, and we decided to put that on the shelf and just start playing as a band, and it's been a lot better." As for the new album at this point "We've got about six or seven songs that are pretty much complete ... and [they're] a lot more uplifting. They've got a more positive outlook to them. It's kind of hard to write a bunch of sad songs if you're not sad anymore. I guess they're pretty different than the songs on the first album. I mean, we wrote those songs like three to four years ago, so obviously we've changed a lot in terms of everything — what we like and what we think is good."
Spencer Smith then commented on when Panic! plan to release some of the new album "We want to have the new single out by the end of the year, probably around Christmas. And then have the album out in February. We hope." [10]

Performances

Panic! at the Disco is known for old-style circus shows, where they bring an entourage of contortionists and dancers on stage with them as they perform. They also had a notable performance in Times Square during the New Year's Eve celebrations in December 2006/January 2007 with Carson Daly. They performed two of their hit songs, "Lying Is the Most Fun a Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off" (Last performance in 2006) and "I Write Sins Not Tragedies" (First performance in 2007). Although both songs include swear words Panic! at the Disco sang censored versions of the songs, because the event was performed on live network television.
Live, they have also performed cover versions of Third Eye Blind's "Slow Motion", Radiohead's "Karma Police", Smashing Pumpkins' "Tonight, Tonight", two versions of Counting Crows' "Round Here", K-Ci and Jojo's "All My Life", Britney Spears' "Baby One More Time", Nelly Furtado's "Maneater", Queen's "Killer Queen", The Beatles's "Eleanor Rigby", blink-182's "What's My Age Again?", and The Band's "The Weight". Biography
Mr. Krabs, born Eugene H. Krabs on November 30, 1942, was the son of Betsy Krabs and an unknown father. He is a descendant of the medieval King, King Krabs. Ever since medieval times (despite the fact there were no American medieval villages), his family has kept a secret recipe for the secret sauce of the family burger- the Krabby Patty. Later in life, Krabs would go into business selling these. In his childhood, times were rough and Mr. Krabs and his family were poor. Mr. Krabs' mother had to sew rags for clothes. Their neighbor, Old Man Jenkins, of whom Mr. Krabs thought as family, helped them through rough times.
Sheldon J. Plankton, born on the same day as Krabs, was his best friend from birth. While at the carnival, Mr. Krabs was amazed at a penny he found, when Plankton told him all about money. Since then, Eugene H. Krabs has always been a penny-pinching financial genius, like he is in the present day. In the episode "My Pretty Seahorse", Mr. Krabs told SpongeBob of a story about his father giving him a dollar at the age of five years old. He recalls that he loved that dollar; however, he spent it on a soda, one hot day at the beach.
Because of his family's poverty, Krabs was teased at Poseidon Elementary School, where Plankton was his only friend. The only place to get a burger in Bikini Bottom, was Stinky Burger, which was owned by a wealthy citizen, Stinky. Krabs and Plankton wanted to get a burger there but Stinky did not like them hanging around his restaurant. After seeing Stinky's wealth, this inspired Krabs and Plankton to create their own burger. When they finally completed it, no one was around to buy it. Upon seeing Old Man Jenkins there, he was the first to try the "Plabs burger." However, the burger was contaminated and Jenkins died. This caused Plankton and Krabs to argue about the burger. Plankton attempted to steal the formula, which ripped in half. Plankton took their burger batch and decided to go into business alone. A shelf in their dump restaurant collapsed, which combined certain ingredients together to form a perfect burger batch. Both Plankton and Krabs attempted to sell their separate creations separately, where only Krabs succeeded. Since the recipe is said to be an old Krabs family recipe, Mr. Krabs' accidental recipe for a burger patty combined with his family's secret sauce. This leads Mr. Krabs to start a business which lead his family out of poverty. Mr. Krabs and his family lived in a pink house where Betsy Krabs lives in the present and his bed and toys are still there.

Since he was a boy, SpongeBob has taken the ownership of Gary. Gary is an intelligent, fully domesticated snail. His intelligence shines through in the fact that he has more intelligent solutions to SpongeBob's dilemmas than SpongeBob himself. But Gary is revealed to be a "mutt" in the episode The Great Snail Race. Gary tends to disagree with some of SpongeBob's ideas, and usually makes an effort to warn SpongeBob. Sometimes he finds SpongeBob to be a complete annoyance, as does Squidward Tentacles. This is evidenced in the episode Sleepy Time. In the episode, Squidward says, "Don't we get enough of you during the day?" Gary seems to agree with him. Gary has had many runs away from SpongeBob: Gary ran away from SpongeBob in Have You Seen This Snail? because SpongeBob forgot to feed him. He was then found by an elderly female owner who fed him a lot, and whatever he wanted. It turned out that she had overfed many snails before. Upon seeing fliers that Spongebob made to look for him, he realized that SpongeBob did love him, and so he went back home. In Dumped he seems to like Patrick more than SpongeBob, and SpongeBob is jealous. However, in the end, it was revealed that Gary only wanted the cookie that was in Patrick's pocket, and then he came back to SpongeBob. The episode ends with Patrick crying, "Gary? I thought what we had was special!"
Gary is able to levitate and teleport, as seen in the episode Gary Takes A Bath. This could mean that psychic powers run in the Star family, as Patrick Star also can display psychic ability.
Some of Gary's meows are lower pitched, some are higher pitched; these could possibly indicate that Gary uses different tones of his voice to communicate with SpongeBob, who is able to take more meaning out of these than most Bikini Bottomites. Gary has only been seen speaking English three times. Once in the episode, Sleepy Time but that was only a dream, and once in the episode Secret Box but he only made a, "Eer" sound and then said, "No." The third time was in the SpongeBob movie, when Gary had a pair of bucket helmets on his eyes. He chanted "Meow Plankton" in unison with the other mind controlled sea creatures saying "All hail Plankton".

Character biography

Patrick is a pink starfish and SpongeBob's best friend. He and SpongeBob have apparently known each other since infancy, and they share many interests (jellyfishing, Mermaid Man and Barnacle Boy, bubble blowing, etc.) It is revealed in the episode "Rule of Dumb" that he and Spongebob's pet snail, Gary, are cousins.
Patrick is very unintelligent. He often convinces SpongeBob to accompany him in dangerous or fruitless activities, such as playing near fish hooks and eating whole pumpkins. In spite of the disastrous outcomes of Patrick's ideas, SpongeBob constantly attests to Patrick's genius, and consults the starfish for advice and guidance.
Patrick has no job or trade and spends most of his time sleeping or playing with SpongeBob. When he tries to find work, it is shown that he has little practical skill, for example in "Big Pink Loser", he struggles with tasks such as sweeping or opening a jar.
Patrick's manner is very childlike, though, like SpongeBob, he prides himself on his self-proclaimed "manliness". Like his friend, he enjoys things that are considered "babyish", such as large lollipops and homemade cookies. Though Patrick is generally kind and friendly, he will, when provoked, go into rages, generally screaming his demands and occasionally attacking those around him.

Appearance and characteristicsSpongeBob is a porous yellow sponge with large blue eyes, a mouth with prominent front teeth, dimples and freckles. He is also, at times, shown to have hair. He typically wears a white shirt with a red tie and brown trousers--hence his surname--and black shoes. He replaces the necktie with a bowtie for special occasions.
SpongeBob is a sea sponge, but he is drawn to resemble a kitchen sponge, apparently because Hillenburg found this design to be more amusing. Due to his soft, pliable frame, he is capable of shape shifting and has shown a degree of superhuman durability, though the latter tends to fluctuate depending on the episode.
SpongeBob lives with his pet snail Gary in a large "pineapple-house". The house has been shown to be edible.

Character info

SpongeBob is marked for his cheerful nature. He is kind almost to a fault, and tries his hardest to make friends with those around him. Though he is generally innocuous, his zealousness in performing many tasks can cause major problems; when SpongeBob puts his mind to a job, he will stick to it almost religiously, and go to extreme lengths to accomplish it.
SpongeBob is said to be an adult, but he has a very childlike manner--he is not ashamed to enjoy things generally associated with younger children, such as cartoons and homemade cookies. He is not good at discerning sarcasm from sincerity, and, at times, is very literal-minded, which can lead to disaster for those around him. Despite these traits, his lightweight appearance, and his lack of physical strength, SpongeBob considers himself very mature, and has attempted--and failed--to prove his "manliness" on many occasions.
SpongeBob has a career as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab restaurant. In spite of his meager salary (he once claimed that he is forced to pay his own boss) and the restaurant's poor working conditions, he is very proud of his trade. He is highly skilled at his job, and has won the Employee of the Month award hundreds of times. As such, he is highly favored by his boss, Mr. Krabs, with whom he has a twisted avuncular relationship; SpongeBob often follows Krabs's orders against his own better judgment.
SpongeBob's best friends are the dimwitted Patrick Star and the tomboyish Sandy Cheeks, whom he often attempts to best in fights and competitions. He has an awkward relationship with his neighbor Squidward Tentacles, who despises SpongeBob, though the sponge views him as very close friend and cannot be convinced otherwise. Squidward often receives the brunt of the consequences of SpongeBob's actions, often by being in the wrong place at the wrong time.
A recurring joke in the series reveals that SpongeBob is incapable of getting his driving license. He has attended Mrs. Puff's boating school for many years, and each year, manages to fail his driving test. SpongeBob attributes this to nervousness behind the wheel; despite knowing how to drive, he loses his composure when driving, often ending up in a car accident.
Despite the fact that Spongebob is invincible, he suffers from dehydration from an episode "Tea at the Treedome" where Spongebob panics that there is no water. He nearly dies of dehydration (along with Patrick) when the two failed to get out of the treedome.

Personal life

Tisdale was born in Monmouth County, New Jersey on July 2, 1985,[2] daughter of Lisa (née Morris) and Mike Tisdale. Her older sister Jennifer Tisdale is also an actress. Her maternal grandfather is Arnold Morris, the developer of Ginsu Knives; through her grandfather, she is also related to businessman Ron Popeil. She has a maltipoo dog, named Blondie.[3][4] Tisdale is Jewish on her mother's side and considers herself Jewish.[5][6] She was discovered by Bill Perlman, who is her current manager, at South Shores Mall, when she was three.[7] She began acting, appearing in stage productions of Gypsy: A Musical Fable and The Sound of Music at the Jewish Community Center of Monmouth County.[8]

Career


Film and television

During the late 1990s, Tisdale appeared in episodes of several television series, including Smart Guy, 7th Heaven, Grounded for Life, Boston Public, Strong Medicine, Charmed, and Beverly Hills, 90210. She had a minor role in the 2001 film Donnie Darko and she guest starred on The Amanda Show and recurring roles on the sitcoms The Hughleys, and Still Standing. In 2002, she starred in a TV commercial for Fruit Gushers (notable for the head transformation) "Photo Booth" and her head transformed into an oversized orange. She also starred in a T-Mobile commercial with Catherine Zeta-Jones and was in a Toys r Us commercial with Abigail Breslin. Then, Tisdale was cast in the role of Maddie Fitzpatrick on The Suite Life of Zack & Cody after auditioning for the roles of Maddie Fitzpatrick and London Tipton.[9] As the series became popular, Tisdale became a featured performer on the Disney Channel and performed a voice role in Whisper of the Heart. She was also cast in Disney Channel Original Movie High School Musical, which became a major success for the channel after its premiere on January 20, 2006 Tisdale also auditioned for the role of Erin Ulmer in Final Destination 3 but lost out to Canadian actress Alexz Johnson.
Tisdale originally tried out for Gabriella Montez, but was cast as Sharpay Evans, due to her alto voice, she suited a darker character.[10] The role required her to perform several songs, including "What I've Been Looking For," "Bop to the Top," and "We're All in This Together." All three managed to chart on the Billboard Hot 100. Additionally, Tisdale made music history by being the first female artist to ever debut with two songs simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 with "What I've Been Looking For" and "Bop to the Top."[11] She has also recorded versions of the songs "Some Day My Prince Will Come" and "Kiss The Girl" (including a music video)[12] for Disney. In addition, she recorded a version of "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" with the other members of the Disney Channel Circle of Stars, and appeared in the Disney Channel Games 2006 as captain of the Green Team. Tisdale is also appearing in the second rendition of the Disney Channel Games this year. More recently, Tisdale signed a deal with Staples, Inc. to appear in the promotional campaign for the company's "Geared 4 School" sweepstakes in the fall. She stars in High School Musical 2, which premiered on August 17, 2007. Tisdale will also have a supporting role in the Disney Channel cartoon Phineas and Ferb.
Tisdale appeared in the second episode of Season 8 of MTV's Punk'd. The skit was, she went to a children's hospital and sang "Kiss the Girl" to a little boy in a coma. After she sang a few lyrics of the song, the boy woke up. As she was singing, the lyrics were being censored out because MTV did not own the rights to the song. She also appeared in an episode where she helped Ashton Kutcher to punk her good friend and High School Musical co-star Zac Efron.
Tisdale told JustJared.com during an interview at the 2007 MTV Movie Awards that she will be filming a movie in August. No other information has been given since she stated she's superstitious.[13]
On July 18, 2007, MTV News confirmed in an article interview with Ashley Tisdale that her August movie will be titled Picture This in which Tisdale plays an unpopular girl working at Petco in this father/daughter movie. Ashley states she will probably return to her natural brunette hair color for this movie.

Music

Tisdale's first solo album, Headstrong, is distributed by Warner Bros. Records and was released on February 6, 2007. The album debuted at number five on the Billboard 200 album charts, selling 64,000 copies.[14] Her first single was "He Said She Said", written by Jonathan "J.R." Rotem and Evan "Kidd" Bogart, but was pushed back and "Be Good To Me" was released. In January 2007, Tisdale was declared the 2nd Hottest Woman of Pop/R&B by Blender Magazine, which stated: "Tisdale has a gift. Not an angelic voice or a dazzling personality, but an even rarer commodity: millions of 'pre-sold' preteens eager to buy her debut album!"[15] In March 2007, Tisdale told Blender that she was drug and alcohol-free, going on to say "my mom really instilled confidence in me, so I'm not somebody who'd be under peer pressure."[16] Recently a Brazilian newspaper claimed that Ashley's new album Headstrong sold 23,000 copies in Brazil and over 900,000 copies worldwide.[17]

Music videos

Tisdale has been in two music videos on for "Be Good To Me", off her album Headstrong , which is on the High School Musical: The Concert DVD. Ashley has also made a music video for "Kiss the Girl", the remake of the song from The Little Mermaid, which can be found on The Little Mermaid Special Edition DVD. She was also featured in the "A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes" (originally from Disney's Cinderella) music video made for Disney Channel, along with several other Disney Channel stars. You can also buy the music videos of "What I've Been Looking For" and "We're All In This Together" from High School Musical on iTunes. The US iTunes Store also sells the High School Musical movie and concert version.
Tisdale filmed three music videos for her current album Headstrong on June 26 ("He Said She Said", "Not Like That" and "Suddenly").[18] "He Said She Said" premiered on TRL in the US on 19 September 2007.[19]

The family moved to Napanee, Ontario, when Lavigne was five years old.
In 1998, Lavigne won a competition to sing with fellow Canadian singer Shania Twain on her first major concert tour. She appeared alongside Twain at her concert in Ottawa, appearing on stage to sing "What Made You Say That".
She was discovered by her first professional manager, Cliff Fabri, while singing country covers at a Chapters bookstore in Kingston, Ontario.[13] During a performance with the Lennox Community Theatre, Lavigne was spotted by local folk singer Steve Medd (a relation of the influential Canadian journalist, Ben Medd), who invited her to sing on his song "Touch the Sky" for his 1999 album Quinte Spirit. She also sang on "Temple of Life" and "Two Rivers" for his follow up album, My Window to You, in 2000.[13]
At the age of sixteen she was signed by Ken Krongard, the artists-and-repertoire (A&R) representative of Arista Records, who invited the head of Arista, Antonio "L.A." Reid, to hear her sing at the New York City studio of producer Peter Zizzo.[13] She then completed work on her first album, Let Go. The Matrix, who worked extensively with Lavigne on the album, commented on her songwriting, saying, "We conceived the ideas on guitar and piano. Avril would come in and sing a few melodies, change a word here or there."[17]

Music career


Let Go (2002–2004)

Let Go was released on June 4, 2002 in the United States, reaching number two there and number one in Australia, Canada, and the United Kingdom. This made Lavigne, at eighteen, the youngest female soloist to have a number-one album in the UK up until that time.[18]
Just over one month after its release, Let Go reached multi-platinum status in late-August,[19] and was certified triple platinum two weeks after.[20] Before the end of 2002, just six months after its debut, it was certified four times platinum by the RIAA.[21] It sold a total of 18 million copies worldwide. It was the best selling album of the year for a female artist and for a debut album in 2002.[22]
Four singles from the album were released. "Complicated" went to number one in Australia, while reaching number two on the U.S. Hot 100, and it was one of the best-selling Canadian singles of 2002. Lavigne tied a record set by Natalie Imbruglia's "Torn" when "Complicated" held the number one spot on the contemporary hit radio chart (which tracks air play on the radio) for eleven weeks in a row.[23] "Sk8er Boi" reached the top ten in the U.S. and Australia, "I'm with You" reached the top ten in the U.S and the UK, and "Losing Grip" reached the top ten in Taiwan and the top twenty in Chile.
Lavigne was named "Best New Artist" at the 2002 MTV Video Music Awards, won four Juno Awards in 2003 (out of six nominations), received a World Music Award for "World's Best-Selling Canadian Singer", and was nominated for eight Grammy Awards, including "Song of the Year" for "Complicated" and "Best New Artist".

Under My Skin (2004–2005)

Lavigne's second album, Under My Skin, was released on May 25, 2004, in the U.S. It debuted at number one in the U.S., the UK, Germany, Japan, Australia, Canada, Mexico, Argentina, Spain, Ireland, Thailand, Korea and Hong Kong and sold more than 380,000 copies in the U.S. in its first week.[24] Lavigne wrote most of the album with Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk, though some tracks were co-written by Ben Moody (formerly of Evanescence), Butch Walker of Marvellous 3, and her former lead guitarist Evan Taubenfeld. Kreviazuk's husband, Our Lady Peace front man Raine Maida, co-produced the album with Butch Walker and Don Gilmore.
Lead single "Don't Tell Me" went to number one in Argentina and Mexico, the top five in the UK and Canada, and the top ten in Australia and Brazil. "My Happy Ending" reached the top ten in the U.S. and was her third-biggest hit there, but third single "Nobody's Home" did not make the top forty. The fourth single from the album, "He Wasn't", reached top forty positions in the UK and Australia, and was not released in the U.S.[25] "Fall to Pieces" was released as the final single from the album, but did not do as well as previous singles.

Lavigne won two World Music Awards in 2004 for "World's Best Pop/Rock Artist" and "World's Best-Selling Canadian Artist". She received five Juno Award nominations in 2005, picking up three, including "Fan Choice Award", "Artist of the Year", and "Pop Album of the Year". She won the award for "Favourite Female Singer" at the eighteenth Annual Nickelodeon Kids' Choice Awards.[26] Lavigne co-wrote "Breakaway" with Matthew Gerard, which was recorded by Kelly Clarkson for the soundtrack to the film The Princess Diaries 2: Royal Engagement (2004).[27] "Breakaway" was later included on Clarkson's second album, Breakaway, being released as the album's first single. The song peaked inside the U.S. top ten and provided Clarkson with a substantial hit.
Lavigne went on a "Live and by Surprise" twenty-one city mall-tour in the U.S. and Canada, starting on March 4, 2004, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to promote Under My Skin. Each performance consisted of a short live acoustic set of songs from the new album. She was accompanied by her guitarist, Evan Taubenfeld. The venue in each city was not announced until forty-eight hours before the show. The tour was very popular and was successful in promoting the album. The set at Indianapolis on March 25, 2004, at Glendale mall included "He Wasn't", "My Happy Ending", "Don't Tell Me", "Take Me Away", "Nobody's Home", "Sk8er Boi", and "Complicated". Selections of this tour were released on the Avril Lavigne Live Acoustic EP, which was released in U.S. Target stores.
Lavigne was touring throughout most of 2005, and pursuing her acting and modelling careers. She represented Canada at the closing ceremony of the 2006 Winter Olympics in Turin, Italy, performing her song "Who Knows" during the eight minutes of the Vancouver 2010 portion.[28]

The Best Damn Thing (2007–present)

Lavigne's third album, The Best Damn Thing, was released on April 17, 2007 and debuted at number one in the U.S. The album was produced by Dr. Luke, Lavigne's husband Deryck Whibley, Rob Cavallo, Butch Walker and Lavigne.[29][30] Travis Barker recorded drums for the record. The first single from the album was "Girlfriend", which became Lavigne's first single to reach number one on the Billboard Hot 100. On Ryan Seacrest's radio show Lavigne said that "When You're Gone" would be the second single.
Lavigne has been doing a small tour to promote The Best Damn Thing, with tickets available only to members of her fan club. [31] She began the tour in Calgary, Alberta, and played for a crowd of around two hundred. This show was aired on television on April 2, 2007, on the CBC Network.
On May 25, 2007, Lavigne, her co-songwriter Lukasz Gottwald, and her record label were sued by songwriters James Gangwer and Tommy Dunbar over claims that her song "Girlfriend" infringes on their 1979 song "I Wanna Be Your Boyfriend", originally performed by The Rubinoos.[32] In June 2007, Canadian singer-songwriter Chantal Kreviazuk, with whom Lavigne wrote the majority of her second album, Under My Skin, spoke to Performing Songwriter magazine about Lavigne's songwriting, saying, "I mean, Avril, songwriter? Avril doesn't really sit and write songs by herself or anything. Avril will also cross the ethical line and no one says anything. That's why I'll never work with her again. I sent her a song two years ago called 'Contagious', and I just saw the tracklisting to this album and there's a song called 'Contagious' on it—and my name's not on it. What do you do with that? See, I won't [call the lawyers], I'll just tell you. Art should not be subject to that kind of controversy."[33] On July 6, Lavigne denied both accusations in an open letter on her website, claiming that she had "never heard the [Rubinoos] song in [her] life" and also that she is considering taking legal action against Kreviazuk with regards to her allegations, which she considers "damaging to my reputation and a clear defamation of my character".[34] On July 10, Kreviazuk made a full public apology and retracted the statements made in the aforementioned interview.[35]
The song "I Don't Have to Try," also stirred up controversy. Similarities between this song and Peaches' 2003 song, "I'm the Kinda" has sparked further plagiarism speculations.[36]
Lavigne recorded a cover of the John Lennon song "Imagine" as her contribution to the album Instant Karma: The Amnesty International Campaign to Save Darfur.[37]



Miscellaneous

Lavigne has also covered the Goo Goo Dolls' mega-hit " Iris", actually performing a duet of the song with the band's lead singer and lyricist John Rzeznik at the Fashion Rocks concert in 2004. Lavigne has stated that "Iris" is her favorite song of all time.[citation needed]
Lavigne has also featured in a comic series called Make 5 Wishes. She stars as herself, a pop star, who is idolized by the protagonist of the story.[38]

Film career

Lavigne made her film debut in the animated film
